2025 Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge rides into town

Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge is taking place on Saturday 29 November. Taupō District Council continues to proudly support and host this fantastic event since its inception in 1977. We welcome all visitors, riders and supporters for New Zealand’s largest cycling occasion.

Start lines are on Tongariro Street for Taupō and Hirangi Street in Tūrangi, with all finishers crossing the line on Tongariro Street heading into the event village on Tongariro Domain.

Note that in addition to road closures, there will be restrictions on access to the police station, marina and dump station at various times, while the bus stop on Tongariro Street will temporarily move to Pāori Hapi Street.

Road closures and traffic management

Temporary road and lane closures will be in place across many areas of the district this Friday 28 and Saturday 29 November. To keep competitors, event officials and spectators safe, these closures take effect at varying times over the weekend.

Central Taupō:

  • Tongariro Street (te Heuheu Street to Spa Road) northbound lane closed Friday 28 November from 9am to Saturday 29 November 9pm. Southbound lane (Spa Road to te Heuheu Street) will be closed Saturday 29 November from 4am to 10.15am and then reopen to traffic.
  • Tongariro Street (Roberts Street to te Heuheu Street) both lanes closed Saturday 29 November 4am to 8.30pm
  • Redoubt Street (Story Place to Tongariro Street) Saturday 29 November 5.30am to 10.15am
  • Roberts Street (Ruapehu Street to Tongariro Street) closed Saturday 29 November 4am to 8.30pm
  • Roberts Street (Titiraupenga to Ruapehu Street) westbound lane only closed Saturday 29 November 4am to 8pm. The eastbound lane will remain open to traffic, and pedestrian access will be available to customers of businesses such as Briscoes and motels.
  • Titiraupenga Street (Roberts Street to Lake Terrace) both lanes closed Saturday 29 November 4am to 8pm
  • Lake Terrace (Ruapehu Street to Titiraupenga Street) closed to public traffic Saturday 29 November 4am to 8pm. Motel and residents to enter and exit via Ruapehu Street
  • Lake Terrace (Kaimanawa Street to Titiraupenga Street) northbound lane closed Saturday 29 November 8am to 8pm
  • Lake Terrace (Mere Road to Kaimanawa Street) northbound lane closed Saturday 29 November 8am to 3pm
Road closures in Taupo.

Poihipi Road area

  • Poihipi Road from Wairakei Drive to Whangamata Road (West bound lane) will be closed on Saturday from 5.30am to 10.30am.

Tūrangi

  • Length of the Lake starts in Tūrangitukua Park, Tūrangi with Stop/Go management in place on Saturday.
  • Intersection of Hirangi Road with State Highway 41 for Southbound traffic will have a Stop/Go in place on Saturday.
  • Intersection of State Highway 41 with State Highway 1 for Northbound traffic will have Stop/Go in place on Saturday.

If you’re travelling further afield, plan ahead and use www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/journey-planner. SH32, SH41, and SH1 are all open, but keep an eye out for planned works from NZTA.

Get out and about to watch the action this Saturday and however you’re involved, have a fantastic and safe weekend.

Access to police station, marina and dump station

  • On Saturday 29 November from 5.30am to 10.15am access to Taupō Police Station, Great Lake Centre, Library and Museum as well as the Marina, Tennis Club and the Bowling Club will be via te Heuheu Street and Story Place. At 10.30amas the event prepares for cyclists to return to the finish line, these venues can be accessed via Redoubt Street.
  • There will be no access to the Marina via Ferry Road from 4am Saturday morning.
  • Cyclists will be on Redoubt Street and around the marina area from about 10.15am so you may experience delays if using this area.
  • Riverside Park Dump Station on Redoubt Street will be closed from 5.30am until 10.15am Saturday 29 November. Please use either Two Mile Bay Boat Ramp or Stag Park during this time.

Bus stop temporary move

  • The bus stop on Tongariro Street will temporarily move to Pāori Hapi Street (opposite the Fine Fettle Café) from 9am Friday 28 November to 9pm Saturday 29 November.
