News
We’ve safely taken care of over half a tonne of coloured sand following last year’s recall.
Friday 30 January 2026 is the last day you can take these sand products to Taupō and Tūrangi landfills.
The disposal bins for the public and schools are open during normal opening hours:
Taupō Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre, Broadlands Road
- Monday to Friday – 8am to 5.30pm
- Weekends – 8am to 6pm
Tūrangi Transfer Station, Te Rangitukehu Street
- Daily – 8am to 5.30pm
Key things to know:
- To dispose of these products at any time, follow WorkSafe guidance on what to do.
- Please remember no asbestos sand items will be accepted after Friday 30 January.
- Our Taupō and Tūrangi Landfill and Transfer Stations will accept the sand in a sealed container, double-bagged in plastic, sealed with tape, clearly labelled as ‘Asbestos Contaminated Material’.
- Speak to staff when you arrive, as they have special bins for disposal.
- There is no charge for disposal for Taupō district residents and schools.
- Please do not put them in kerbside rubbish or recycling bins, or bring affected products to any other offices or libraries for disposal.
