Something to bark about: Paws and Pages returns for 2026

Taupō Library's Paws and Pages programme, that allows young readers to read stories to dogs was a hit last year and the bi-monthly sessions restart from Tuesday 17 February from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Paws and Pages offers a calm environment where children can build their reading confidence.

Run by the Canine Friends Pet Therapy organisation, Paws and Pages had already proven successful in other districts before coming to Taupō. President Vicky Graham is looking forward to the programme's return.

“Dogs are completely non-judgemental." Vicky says. "They’re a calm reading companion; they’re not going to tell a child off for pronouncing a word incorrectly. The sessions are not only for children with reading difficulties but also for children who don’t have a lot of self-confidence.”

International research shows many people experience an improvement in their mental and physical health from interacting with animals. Taupō Library’s senior customer services officer Lindsey Seaton is excited to see children develop their reading skills in a safe space.

“The kids can choose a book from the shelf or bring one from home,” Lindsey says. “It’s not just about reading; it’s about having confidence in what you’re saying and knowing that every voice has value.”

Paws and Pages sessions:

• Every second Tuesday from Tuesday 17 February
• At Taupō Library after school from 3.30pm to 4.30pm
• 15 minute slots available for children to book a reading session
• Bookings essential. Places limited.
