Co-Chairs appointed in Tūrangi

The Tūrangi Co-Governance Committee is back up and running for 2026, with Te Wharau Walker Jr elected as Co-Chair alongside Mayor John Funnell at last week’s meeting.

Te Wharau says it’s great to see the group reconvening, with a full agenda already taking shape for the year ahead.

“We have a lot of projects on the table, including a look at our Tūrangi Reserves, and we’re really keen to get our whare paku project progressed as well. We’re looking forward to a busy year,” he said.

The first meeting kicked off with a productive kōrero on the Tūrangi public toilets, marking an important step forward for the project. Council staff are now progressing with the design phase, with plans confirmed to rebuild the new toilets on the same site as the existing block.

Work to demolish the old toilet block is expected to begin around the middle of the year. The new facilities will be fabricated off site before being transported and installed, which means there may be a period where little appears to be happening on the ground. Behind the scenes, however, work will be well underway.
