Omori water treatment plant coming online

Construction of the new water treatment plant being built behind the Omori Community Hall is complete and commissioning is underway.
Commissioning engineer Tom Marshall of Marshall Projects says this phase of Omori’s $8.3 million new water treatment plant is progressing well and they are hoping to have the plant online and supplying the community in March.
The new 260 sq.m plant will mean Omori, Kuratau and Pukawa’s water supply will meet Taumata Arowai’s strict drinking water standards. It follows on from the opening of a new water treatment plant in Kinloch last year and will in turn be followed by a new plant to serve Motuoapa.
Besides all the pumping and treatment equipment, the new Omori plant has control and instrumentation systems that send information back to the council’s waters operations team so that quality and supply can be constantly monitored.
“We’re close to being operational,” Mr Marshall says. “With the electrical components alone we’re talking in the order of 3000 tags, each one installed on a tank or on a piece of pipe, so it takes a while because each one of those has to be checked individually.”
The new plant has its own back-up generator in case of a power cut and can treat 2000 cubic metres of water per day. It has been built to withstand a major earthquake and has space to add another 500 cubic metres of extra water processing capacity if needed in the future.
