Tūrangi Reserves Management Plan adopted

The adoption of the Tūrangi Reserves Management Plan at a Co‑Governance meeting on Tuesday 17 February marks an important milestone in the partnership between Ngāti Tūrangitukua and Taupō District Council.

The plan fulfils a key commitment of the Mana Whakahono‑a‑Rohe agreement and sets out how Tūrangi’s reserves will be managed, balancing cultural values, environmental protection, recreation and community use.

Public consultation resulted in 30 submissions, with strong overall support for the draft plan. 88 per cent of submitters supported the plan’s objectives and actions, and feedback directly informed changes made before adoption.

Updates to the final plan include a focus on resolving drainage issues at Te Kapua Park, the removal of truck and trailer parking from Waipapa Recreation Reserve, and increased opportunities to share cultural narratives across all reserves.

The vision for Tūrangi’s reserves is that they are places where Ngāti Tūrangitukua values stand tall, and where the reserves’ values are respected and enjoyed by the community and visitors.

The plan confirms Tūrangitukua Park as the town’s main sports venue, with Te Kapua Park continuing as Tūrangi’s central community park, and outlines future improvements and management changes at Waipapa Reserve.

Together, the plan provides a clear, agreed framework to guide future decision‑making and investment in Tūrangi’s reserves.
