Safer speed campaign kicks off

School goes back on Monday and it’s a timely reminder to all drivers to slow down – particularly around schools.

It’s well-known that speeding increases the risk of death or serious injury to not just drivers but everyone around them. How fast a vehicle is moving when a crash happens will most likely determine whether anyone is killed, injured, or unharmed; and children are especially vulnerable.

The Just Slow Down speed reduction campaign, a collaboration between Council, Police, NZTA Waka Kotahi and ACC, urges drivers to take a simple but powerful step: drive within the speed limit.

The campaign will focus on education about the consequences of speeding, but Taupō Policing Area Senior Sergeant Fane Troy says it will be supported by enforcement.

“Everyone should expect Police to enforce anytime, anywhere on our roads. There’s no excuse for speeding. If you’re driving above the speed limit, expect the appropriate enforcement action.”

Taupo District Council road safety coordinator Sarah Wraight says we need everyone's help to reduce the risk and make our roads safer.

“It’s on drivers to make the decision to keep themselves and others safe on the road. Road deaths from excess speed have torn families apart. Together we can make everyone safer on the roads.”
