Expect breath and drug testing anytime, anywhere

Drivers can expect to see more breath and drug testing stops, alongside advertising and education initiatives, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce harm on our roads.

The “your keys, your responsibility” campaign, a collaboration between Taupō District Council, Police and Waikato Regional Council, puts it on drivers to make one simple decision – not driving impaired – to keep themselves and others safer on our roads.

Driving impaired by alcohol or drugs continues to cause deaths and serious injuries, and the impact is felt by whānau, friends, workmates and the wider community.

Taupō Policing Area Senior Sergeant Fane Troy says drivers should expect Police to enforce anytime, anywhere.

“There’s no excuse for driving impaired by alcohol or drugs. If you’re caught and found to be over the limit or test positive for recent use of drugs, expect the appropriate enforcement action.”

Taupō District Council road safety coordinator Sarah Wraight says most people get the message, but those who don’t are putting everyone at risk.

“Every death on our roads is a tragedy. If you’re drinking, sort a sober ride before you go out.”
