Tūwharetoa Taiopenga Kapa Haka Festival returns

Taupō District proudly welcomes the return of the annual Ngāti Tūwharetoa Taiopenga Kapa Haka Festival next week, from Tuesday 15 to Friday 18 September.

This of course means there will be some impact to the Taupō Events Centre, AC Baths, and some of your regular classes.

The Ngāti Tūwharetoa Taiopenga Kapa Haka Festival is celebrating 40 years of schools' kapa haka and is always a fantastic event that everyone is welcome to attend. Running daily from 9am to 4pm, with entry by koha, there are around 3,000 performers and supporters at this event from over 80 groups including primary, intermediate and secondary schools, early childhood centres and kōhanga reo.

Car park space will be very limited, so plan ahead if you are attending. There will be event signage in place, and high volumes of traffic and pedestrian activity on AC Baths Avenue which will have a speed reduction to 30km/h from 7am Tuesday 15 September to 5pm on Friday 18 September.

Traffic marshals will be in place throughout the week, but please take extra care while driving in the area. A reminder that the car park is very busy during this time, so please be sure to allow extra time when coming to the centre.

Please check below for opening and closing days/times for the facility and how you may be affected.

The Kapa Haka festival is truly a great experience, so if you have a chance please get down to the stadium and support the children.

  • The stadium courts are closed from Friday 11 September and will reopen at 5pm on Monday 21 September.

Taupō Rockwall is closed on the following dates:

  • Monday 14 September
  • Thursday 17 September

Taupō Rockwall is open on the following dates from 10am to 3pm:

  • Saturday 12 September
  • Sunday 13 September
  • Saturday 19 September
  • Sunday 20 September

From Monday 21 September normal opening days and hours resume.

Some classes are affected so please check the information below:

  • Thursday 10 September - classes on as normal.
  • Monday 14 September - classes cancelled
  • Thursday 17 September - classes cancelled
  • Monday 21 September - classes on as normal.

  • Aqua fitness and swim school classes are on as usual.
  • Indoor Lane pool is closed to the public on Saturday 19 September from 12pm to 4pm, and on Sunday 20 September from 8am to 12pm.

Be aware that the pools and changing rooms may be busy with so many people at the stadium and the Global Games the same week. We will monitor how busy they pools are and may have to limit how many people are in the pool at any one time for safety reasons. The main leisure pool is often fully booked in the afternoons, so plan ahead if you want to come for a swim.

  • The mezzanine will be closed from Friday 11 September and will reopen on Monday 21 September.
  • Masters Club and Lite Classes on Tuesday 15 and Thursday 17 September are cancelled, however you can access the gym if you wish.
  • There are no other changes and we are open as per usual opening times.
