Bringing te reo Māori to everyday museum experiences

Taupō Museum is inviting the community to use and experience te reo Māori throughout September, thanks to support from the Te Reo Towns Activation Fund.

The fund supports initiatives that help make te reo Māori a part of everyday life, encouraging its use beyond classrooms and into community spaces people use every day.

Although Māori Language Week begins on 14 September, te reo Māori will be celebrated throughout September at Taupō Museum, with language woven into exhibits, activities, music and games.

Collections curator Danielle Lane says the museum wanted to create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to experience te reo Māori in a fun and accessible way.

"Te reo Māori is an important part of who we are as a community, and we wanted to create simple ways for people to experience and use it during their visit," she says.

"We hope these activities spark curiosity and encourage people to keep using te reo Māori beyond the museum."
