The Great Lake Centre is the district’s number one year-round events venue for musicals, conferences, concerts, shows, sports and community events. Planned refurbishments are now complete, meaning the venue remains at the heart of the community.
Stan Walker, Six60, Sir Dave Dobbyn and the Topp Twins are just a few of the names who have graced the stage since the Great Lake Centre opened in 1992. Now, over thirty years later, this vital community landmark has received its first makeover.
Taupō District Council’s facilities officer Tonia Absolom says the refurbishment was key to modernising the centre. The 1990’s colour scheme has been renewed with some eye-catching elements.
“We’ve already had bands comment on the upgrades to the sound and lighting. The Hall and Theatre now have acoustic panelling, and the updated audio-visual system means we can produce an enhanced experience for everyone to enjoy a show,” says Tonia.
“Visitors will notice improvements to all areas of the venue. We acknowledge the numerous endowments and sponsors who have supported the construction and ongoing life of the centre since the very beginning. It’s the backing of locals that continue to help us bring the place to life.”
The main exhibition hall has been opened up offering a more cohesive space and the refurbishments have extended the life of the venue.
“It’s now more modern and an impressive destination that holds many events for the region. We haven’t increased the footprint of the building but by renovating the venue and technical equipment, we’ve brought the Great Lake Centre into the 21st century,” says Tonia.
“I’m proud we have delivered the project and design in-house using all local contractors, ensuring the Great Lake Centre is fit for the future, able to retain and attract events with the economic boost that it brings to the whole district.”
The Great Lake Centre will soon host the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, award-winning artist Ash Grunwald, and popular favourites like the Home and Garden Show.
