Celebrate safely this Guy Fawkes
News
With Guy Fawkes on this week, please spare a thought for the animals of Taupō District.
Fireworks can be frightening and distressing for the dogs, cats, birds, and wildlife that call Taupō District home.
Tips for keeping pets safe and comfortable:
- Keep your fur babies indoors and avoid leaving them alone
- Stay with them if possible and offer reassurance
- Create a quiet, safe space away from windows
- Play music or other background noise to help mask fireworks sounds
- Exercise pets earlier in the day to help them relax
Please remember that fireworks are not permitted in Taupō District’s reserves and public places, including parks, reserves, and sports fields.
This year the fire risk is higher than usual after a prolonged period of dry weather.
If you’re using fireworks at home, remember to:
- Follow the instructions and remember fireworks are for people aged 18+
- Light fireworks well away from anything that could catch fire
- Don’t set off fireworks if it’s windy.
- Take extra care if alcohol is involved
- Keep a bucket or hose nearby for emergencies
- Soak used fireworks in water before disposing of them in your rubbish.
If you’re celebrating with fireworks, please do so responsibly and with consideration for your neighbours, animals, and the environment.
