Archway installation underway
As part of our 10-year anniversary celebrations with our sister city of Suzhou, China we have been gifted an archway to commemorate the occasion.
Contractors are currently busy with the challenging installation at the southern entrance to the Tongariro Domain. Complete with concrete footings and pillars, workmen are well equipped with a crane, scaffolding and all the required safety measures to ensure there is no damage to the pieces or their fingers!
Facilities manager Garreth Robinson is enjoying the challenge of the project and is looking forward to seeing the finished product.
"The archway has several key elements and will have storyboard signage, so both locals and visitors can learn the cultural significance of our relationship with Suzhou," he says.
"It will look great once all of the pieces come together."
An official opening ceremony will take place on August 30, coinciding with the opening of a Suzhou exhibition at Taupō Museum, Faith and Life.
So if you're in the area at the end of this month or September and are planning on exploring artefacts from ancient China at the exhibition, why not pop down to see the archway on the way to the museum.
