New Zealand Women Artists; From Yesteryear to Today
14 January 2015
Some of New Zealand's best known and loved female artists will showcase their work at an exhibition at Taupo Museum.
The exhibition, New Zealand Women Artists: From Yesteryear to Today, opens Saturday and features paintings, sculptures and prints which the public rarely see.
The exhibition, curated by Helene Phillips of Ferner Galleries, includes artworks by 19th century artists Margaret Soddart and Eleanor Hughes and photographs and masterpieces by contemporary practitioners. It also features works by leading Maori artists Emily Karaka, Huhana Smith, Tracey Tawhiao, Saffronn Te Ratana, Robyn Kahukiwa and Kura Te Waru Rewiri.
These Maori women artists' personal creations have helped celebrate Māori art and culture, present controversial socio-cultural issues and raise awareness for contemporary Māori art on the world stage, Helene said.
Many of the works are for sale, with the proceeds assisting the Geyser Art Fund and Taupo Museum.
The exhibition runs from Saturday, January 17 to March 2. The museum is open seven days a week from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors or tertiary students and free to children and Taupo District residents with proof of address.
