Plastic recycling changes for Taupo District
Changes in the global market will see Taupo District Council stop recycling 3-7 plastics from October 1 due to China no longer accepting them from New Zealand.
Any plastics 3-7 will need to be disposed of in rubbish bags. The changes do not affect plastics 1-2 which represent about 70 per cent of the recycling currently undertaken via either kerbside recycling or by way of our transfer stations across the district.
Stormwater and solid waste manager Brent Aitken said the changes were unavoidable and were being faced across the country.
"This gives our community an opportunity to carry on the momentum the various Plastic Free July initiatives created. This can range from eliminating the use of single-use plastic bags, to changing our purchasing habits of products packaged in plastic containers in the 3-7 coded range."
There is no change to recycling of other products, including tins and glass.
