Boil water notice remains in place for Tokaanu residents
Tokaanu residents using the town water supply – from the township to the Tokaanu bridge – are being asked to boil water until at least Friday, following a double pipe break in the township yesterday. Signs have also been erected at the Tokaanu stream, and residents are asked to avoid using the area for recreational purposes.
While the broken water main and sewer main have both had temporary repairs overnight, there is still a possibility that wastewater entered the water supply when the pipes broke yesterday afternoon.
We are taking a cautious approach to ensure the health of our residents and need to be certain that the water supply is safe to drink, said head of operations Kevin Strongman.
“We’re expecting the first set of results back late this afternoon and will then need a further 3 days of clear test results. That means, until at least Friday, residents must boil all water that is used for drinking, cooking and washing teeth for at least one minute. No treatment is required for other water use like washing clothes or taking a bath or shower,” he said.
“Any residents wishing to fill containers for drinking water can do so at the water tanker which we have placed on Puanga St. We have also opened the Turtle Pools’ facilities to any residents in the area to use if they prefer to shower there.
“This is an unfortunate incident and I’d like to thank all residents for their patience as we work to ensure the water supply is safe. We’ve been door to door letting people know and are revisiting houses this morning where no one was home at the time,” he said.
