Council to increase procurement weighting for local businesses
Taupō District Mayor David Trewavas has announced an immediate move to temporarily increase the level of weighting given to local businesses in council’s procurement policy.
Council’s normal policy allows for a 5 per cent weighting towards local business. This has now been increased to 15 per cent, effective immediately and until further notice.
The move is one which supports the idea to ‘support local’ in the wake of COVID-19.
“I’ve told our community that we should be rallying behind our local businesses and I’m pleased that we are able to lead by example and introduce this across the district, until further notice,” Mr Trewavas said.
“We are expecting to see economic impacts across the district as a result of COVID-19 and we need to be ensuring we can do everything we can to lessen that impact as much as possible.
“Along with these new procurement methods, we’ll also be ensuring what we do buy is bought from retailers and businesses in the Taupō District.
“This is about locals supporting locals,” he said.
