Taupō Disc Golf - Licence to Occupy

Taupō Disc Golf Club have requested a new licence to continue occupying part of Spa Thermal Park. The licence would be for a term of 10-years.

About Spa Thermal Park

Spa Thermal Park is a recreation reserve owned by Taupō District Council and managed in accordance with the Spa Thermal Park and Riverbank Recreational and Scenic Reserve Management Plan 2000.

Located east of the Waikato River and south/west of Owen Delany Park, Spa Park consists of approximately 36 hectares and is utilised by members of the public including dog walkers, various community groups and tourists. The public can access Otumuheke Stream hot pools and walk or bike the Huka scenic trails and rotary ride mountain bike trail from the reserve.

Disc Golf

Played much like traditional golf, however players throw a disc from a teepad to a basket. The Taupō Disc Golf Club Incorporated report the course is within the top 100 international courses on UDisc, with its current position at 75. The club report that it is significant that it is one of few free public courses in the top 100.

Licence

Council may permit leases or licenses on the reserve, ensuring the land is managed in a way that provides for a natural experience of the environment, large open space and access to the Waikato River.

The disc golf course was established in 2020 under the previous licence. Upon expiration of the licence, the Taupō Disc Golf Club Incorporated requests a new licence to continue occupying part of the reserve.

Subject to the outcome of public consultation, the Regulatory Committee agrees in principle to grant a licence to Taupō Disc Golf Club Incorporated to establish a disc golf course for a term of 10-years commencing 17 February 2024 to 16 February 2034.

Hearing, deliberations and final decision

Submitters may request to be heard in support of their submission or objection, and the Regulatory Committee will full give consideration to every objection or submission received before deciding whether to grant the licence.

When you make a submission, you will be given the option on whether you want to present your view to the Regulatory Committee in person. If you do, we will book a speaking time for you during the public forum at 1pm on Tuesday 19 May 2026.

You will be given up to 5 minutes to present your submission and answer any questions. The committee will consider all submissions, regardless of whether you wish to speak in person or not.

Following deliberations there will be a final decision on the granting of the new licence and we will communicate the outcome to all submitters.
