You may have noticed some activity recently at the site of the old wharepaku (or public toilets) in Tūrangi. The old facility has now been removed, making way for a brand-new public amenity.
The new seven-toilet facility has been prefabricated off-site and is scheduled to arrive in Tūrangi this week for installation and commissioning.
Tūrangi Co-Governance Committee chair Te Wharau Walker Jr said careful thought has gone into the design, including a striking feature wall created by local artist Te Maari Gardiner.
“A design working group comprising hapū and community representatives, council officers, and the manufacturer worked together to ensure the facility is not only safe, durable and fit for purpose, but also reflects the area's history, identity, and people,” he said.
Project manager Pete Bradshaw said public toilets are often the first and last impression people have of a town.
“We hope this new facility creates a positive impression of Tūrangi and is something the community can be proud of,” he says. “By treating it with care and respect, everyone can play a part in ensuring it remains a safe and welcoming space for residents and visitors alike for many years to come.”
The new toilets are due to open in November.
