Project overview
A new public toilet building on Te Rangitautahanga Road will provide a modern, fit-for-purpose facility for residents and visitors in Tūrangi.
The new seven-toilet facility will include six standard individual toilet units and one accessible unit. The toilets are being built and installed by Exeloo, a specialist in public toilet systems both in New Zealand and overseas, supported by local subcontractors.
Careful thought has gone into the design, including a striking feature wall created by local artist Te Maari Gardiner. A design working group comprising hapū and community representatives, Council officers, and the manufacturer worked together to ensure the facility is not only safe, durable and fit for purpose, but also reflects the area's history, identity, and people.
The old public toilet block was removed in October, along with a small number of trees in the vicinity, to make way for the new toilets. Some ground works will be carried out in preparation for the new building, while new kowhai trees are going to be planted in the adjacent car park.
The new facility is being prefabricated off-site and will be transported to Tūrangi for installation in the last week of October.
The new toilet block is due to open to the public in mid-November.
