Project overview
Construction of the new Motuoapa Water Treatment Plant has been completed, with the official opening taking place in October 2026.
It is a state-of-the-art membrane style plant with an added treatment process to address the natural arsenic levels found in Lake Taupō. While the lake intake remains, a new dedicated raw water pipe from the intake to the new plant has been installed too.
The new plant provides Motuoapa residents with a higher degree of protection and improved resilience for their drinking water supply that meets New Zealand drinking water standards.
With the capacity to treat over 1200m3 of water at peak production per day - that's enough to fill a standard Olympic-sized swimming pool every second day - the plant has been designed to service planned growth for Motuoapa.
