Council meetings
Local government is about local communities and is a crucial part of our democracy. Local communities elect our Mayor and Councillors who then have responsibility for making decisions on important local issues.
Council meetings are where our Mayor and Councillors meet to discuss, debate and make decisions. Meeting minutes are kept as an official record of all decisions made in meetings, to ensure transparency and accountability. Meetings are generally open to the public to attend in person or watch online.
Key things to know about meetings
- Meeting location: Council Chambers at He Whare Hono ō Tūwharetoa - Level 1, 67 Horomātangi Street, Taupō.
- Attend meetings: All meetings are open to the public to attend, except for any 'public excluded' items which will be shown on the agenda.
- Watch meetings online: Watch council meetings live or on-demand on our YouTube channel.
- Agendas and minutes: Official records of meetings are available on our agendas and minutes page.
- Public forum: Members of the public may speak to council at the beginning of meetings, upon prior request, in the public forum.
Meeting dates
The Council meets as a full council (called an 'Ordinary Council meeting') on a monthly basis, with meetings typically held on the last Tuesday of each month. Additional ordinary meetings will be added as needed.
Sometimes meetings need to be held at short notice. These are called an 'Extraordinary council meeting' and typically have a specific issue to consider that is more urgent and cannot wait until the next ordinary meeting.
