July school holiday fun

Free activities at Taupō Museum these school holidays.

The Niven room has been transformed for the July holidays to entertain and educate the kids. Take part in the Puanga/ Matariki star-hunt and immerse yourself in a restful glow-in-the-dark universe of stars, comets and galaxies called Te Waka O Rangi. In this delightful activity space children can make their own glow-in-the-dark star and leave it at reception. Your star will be placed with all the others in Te Waka o Rangi where it will join a universe of stars to tell its own unique story.

Kids will also be able to enjoy interactive story-telling sessions with Jeffrey throughout the holidays. Numbers are limited and bookings are required so email taupomuseum@taupo.govt.nz or phone 07 376 0414 to secure a spot!

School group visits

BY PRIOR ARRANGEMENT ONLY

We offer visiting school groups to the museum a wide range of programmes inspired by local history and issues, current art exhibitions and museum displays.

Our programmes are linked to the New Zealand curriculum documents, contain creative learning opportunities, encourage cooperative learning and have achievable outcomes for all students.

There is no charge for school group visits.

Tapuaeharuru history walk

ONE HOUR SESSION | BY PRIOR ARRANGEMENT ONLY

Explore Tapuaeharuru, the original name for Taupō, on a guided walk led by Jeffrey Addison, museum programmes & events coordinator.

Starting at the museum, the tour visits the Tapuaeharuru redoubt, Parakiri boat landing, Tene Waitere’s waharoa, and ends at Te Ātea with insights into its carvings. The walk covers Māori and settler history.

Tours are available in te Reo Māori, bilingual, or English. Accompanying educational resources are available on request. Jeffrey can also teach his waiata Tapuaeharuru to school groups to sing at Te Ātea as an uplifting end to the tour.

Waiata Papaki – Singalong Sessions

ONE HOUR SESSION | BY PRIOR ARRANGEMENT ONLY

Free music making sessions are available where groups of pre-school and primary school children can develop their sense of rhythm, melody and Te reo Māori pronunciation.

Form a percussion ‘orchestra’ with shakers, clappers and bells to help keep the beat and sing waiata led by Jeffery Addison, the museum’s programmes & events co-ordinator.
