Zero Tolerance for unacceptable behaviour
Taupō District Council is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for everyone who interacts with us - including staff, elected members, volunteers, customers, and visitors.
We have a zero tolerance policy for abuse, aggression, threats, intimidation, harassment, or violence in any of our workplaces or service settings.
Uncomfortable, unpredictable, or unsafe behaviour is not acceptable.
Why we have a Zero Tolerance Policy
Our people deliver essential services to the community every day. This policy is in place to protect their wellbeing and to ensure that our community can access Council services in a safe, fair, and respectful environment.
What this means for you
We expect all interactions with Council to be respectful and appropriate. If behaviour becomes unsafe, threatening, or unacceptable:
- Our staff are supported to pause or end the interaction immediately
- We may amend how we continue to engage (for example, requiring contact through specific channels)
- We will continue to provide services, but in a way that ensures safe and respectful interactions for everyone involved.
This approach allows us to manage situations proportionately while maintaining access to Council services.
Where this applies
This policy applies to all interactions with Council, including:
- In person
- Phone calls
- Email and written correspondence
- Online services and forms
- Social media and other digital platforms
Working together
Our Zero Tolerance Policy sits alongside our Customer Charter (below), which sets out expectations for respectful, clear, and constructive communication on both sides.
By working together and treating each other with respect, we can ensure our spaces remain safe, welcoming, and accessible for everyone in our community.
