Some properties in the Taupō District are outside of council’s reticulated (public) drinking water suppy areas.
These properties rely on a private water supply, such as a bore (well), roof-collected rainwater tank or a small privately managed community supply. Older private supplies can carry a higher risk of pipe breaks or contamination.
Your responsibilities
If your drinking water comes from a private source, you are responsible for ensuring it is safe to drink. This includes:
- knowing where your water source is and ensuring it is well maintained
- following safe drinking water guidelines for private supplies
- regularly testing your private supply
- seeking advice early if you plan changes to your property or water system.
