Know who's responsible

You're responsible for the pipes that run from inside your house to your property boundary. At the boundary, your drinking water and wastewater pipes connect to our network, which Council manages.

Check the most common queries we get about water and see some simple steps you can take to fix or report them.

If you have no water, check for leaks first within your property (between the house and the property boundary). If there are no obvious leaks, call us on 07 376 0899.

Cloudiness is usually caused by tiny air bubbles trapped in the water – similar to dissolved gas in a fizzy drink. It often happens after pipe repairs or when cold water warms up in household plumbing. The water is still safe to drink. If you fill up a glass, you’ll notice the water soon clears.

Brown, yellow, or rusty‑coloured water is typically caused by naturally-occurring minerals (like iron or manganese) being stirred up in the pipes. This can happen after a watermain break, hydrant flushing, or a sudden change in flow rate or direction.

If you have discoloured water at your property, run an outside tap for five to 10 minutes to flush the pipes. If you still have discoloured water after that, please contact us to report the fault so our team can investigate.

A metallic taste often comes from household plumbing rather than the public water supply. Older pipes, hot‑water cylinders, or taps can release small amounts of metals, especially if water has been sitting in the pipes overnight.

We recommend running your cold water tap to let a couple of cups of water down the drain each morning before you take a drink. This flushes out water that’s been sitting in your pipes overnight.

Low pressure can be caused by planned maintenance work taking place in the area, leaks in the network, or may indicate an issue with your household plumbing.

For low water pressure, check your water toby (main water valve) is fully open by turning it anti-clockwise.

If you still have low water pressure and there are no outages:

  • Contact a plumber if the low pressure is only in one tap, and it only affects hot water.
  • Contact us if all your taps have low pressure, your cold water has low pressure, or your cold and hot water both have low pressure.

The biggest source of wasted water is leaks and who fixes water leaks depends on where the leak is.

You should call a plumber or drainlayer if:

  • there's a leak or burst pipe on your property
  • a tap is leaking or won’t turn on or off
  • groundwater won’t drain off your property.
