Taking care of water in the Taupō District

We’re proud to take good care of the district’s water.

We provide drinking water for one large town, two smaller towns and a range of smaller settlements. Our population is growing and we're a popular tourist spot, which puts added pressure on our drinking water network, especially over the summer.

All of this means we need to carefully manage the precious taonga that is water - for today and into the future.

Investing in safe and resilient water infrastructure

Council continues to prioritise investment in our essential water infrastructure. Water treatment plants in several communities are being upgraded to ensure drinking water is treated in a way that contnues to meet drinking water standards.

Four new water treatment plants have been built and opened across 2025 and 2026, with two more plant builds due for completion in late 2026 and 2027.

In total, $330 million is set aside in our Long-term Plan 2024-34 for investment in our drinking water, wastewater and stormwater network over a 10-year period.
