Taharepa Road roundabouts

Project overview

New roundabouts are being built on two busy intersections along Taharepa Road in Taupō to improve traffic flow and safety for all road users. The project is taking place in three stages:

  • Stage 1 (September-October 2025): Construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Taharepa Road and Crown Road. This phase also includes a new pedestrian crossing and more parking by the Tauhara shops.
  • Stage 2 (October-December 2025): Construction of a second roundabout at the intersection of Tauhara Road, AC Baths Avenue and Taharepa Road. The intersection will be widened to fit the roundabout and pedestrian refuge islands on all sides.
  • Stage 3 (February 2026): Resealing of Taharepa Road between Four Square (Tauhara shops) and Te Hātepe Road. Crown Road will also be resealed between Taharepa Road and Miro Street.

While these important safety upgrades are being made, please be aware that traffic management and road closures will be in place at times. Expect delays and allow extra time for travel.

1 DECEMBER 2025 - New roundabout completed ahead of schedule

Construction of the new roundabout at the Tauhara Road/Taharepa Road/AC Baths Avenue intersection has been completed nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. This upgrade, similar to the recently installed Crown Road/Taharepa Road roundabout, will make this busy junction safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians while improving traffic flow.

A shout out to our hardworking team for completing the upgrade quickly and safely, and a big thank you to the community for your patience during construction.

The final stage of this project will see Taharepa Road resealed, with that work to take place early in the New Year.

20 OCTOBER 2025 - New roundabout now open on Crown and Taharepa roads intersection

The new roundabout at the intersection of Crown and Taharepa roads is now open with a smoother flowing traffic layout that is safer for drivers, pedestrians and the nearby school.
