Landfill and transfer stations
COVID-19 Protection Framework
Please be aware all of our landfill and transfer stations have customer limits and physical distancing requirements, so expect delays. Eftpos only will be available – no cash accepted.
Visitors to our landfill and transfer stations are encouraged to wear a face covering outdoors when you cannot maintain physical distance from others. You legally must wear a face covering when visiting indoor facilities, this includes the Habitat for Humanity recycling centre. In addition, you should keep track of everywhere you have been and you can use the NZ COVID Tracer app to scan QR codes at our landfill and district transfer stations. If you do not use the app, use whatever method works for you, like the NZ COVID Tracer booklet or write it down.
For more information about council's facilities, venues and services under the COVID-19 Protection Framework go to our COVID-19 section.
Overview of facilities
One landfill and resource recovery centre in Taupo and five transfer stations located around the district cater for the safe disposal of general rubbish, green waste and recycled items.
Opening hours vary across the different locations, while all facilities are closed on Christmas Day, Good Friday and up to 1pm on Anzac Day.
Please be aware hazardous waste that can endanger human health, such as asbestos, medical waste and radioactive substances are not accepted at the Broadlands Road landfill or any of our transfer stations. If you have waste that may be considered dangerous or hazardous or you are not sure about, please contact us prior to visiting one of our sites to see if it will be accepted.
