Parks and reserves FAQs

Here you can find answers to commonly asked questions about lots of things related to parks and reserves. If you can't find an answer to a question you have about parks and reserves please contact us.

For the enjoyment of our community and visitors we have free electric BBQ's located on lakefront reserves in the following locations:

  • Hot Water Beach on Lake Terrace
  • Two Mile Bay Reserve (near the boat ramp)
  • Three Mile Bay, between Wharewaka Reserve and Secombe Park
  • Wharewaka Reserve (near the playground)
  • Acacia Bay
  • Kinloch
  • Mangakino Lakefront Reserve

All of the BBQ's are free of charge and will function for 20 minute intervals at the push of a button. They are easy to use and are cleaned at least once a day by our sanitation staff and steam-cleaned monthly.

To ensure everyone can benefit from the facilities, please leave the BBQ's in a tidy state after use.

Boat launching facilities

Some of our reserves provide boat launching facilities. There are rules and regulations in place for boat launching in the Taupō District.

We also control, administer and manage the 49 boat pens located at the Nukuhau Boat Reserve, 14 Rauhoto Street.

Nukuhau Boat Reserve

We control, administer and manage the recreation reserve known as the Nukuhau Boat Reserve. There are 49 boat pens located within the reserve at 14 Rauhoto Street. These are available to the public for the storage of masted craft.

Boat pens are available in two sizes and the per annum costs are:

  • 9 metre $1,610.00 (including GST)
  • 11 metre $1,835.00 (including GST)

Payment can be made either monthly, quarterly, six monthly or annually.

Licences are issued for a three year period.

Booking a reserve for an event

Some reserves can be booked for events or functions. Search all Taupō District reserves and make a booking enquiry on our Bookable website.

Setting up an occupation or business on a reserve

Longer term occupation for clubrooms, business or trade, or recreation facilities will require a lease or licence which will need to be authorised by the relevant governance group.

Camping is not permitted on most of our parks or neighbourhood recreation reserves. There are specified camping locations in the Taupō District.

Dogs are permitted on most reserves which are a great place for dogs to run around safely (outside of the children's play area). In our reserves, you'll find plenty of shaded areas and seats and you might even find the ocassional doggy water fountain too!

Remember that dogs must be on a lead at all times, unless in a designated off-leash area. While enjoying off-leash areas in reserves, please ensure dogs are kept under control at all times and are cleaned up after. We encourage everyone to bring their own bags, however free 'pooper scooper' bags are available in dispensers on reserves where dogs are permitted. Dog fouling on a park or reserve is an offence.

Note that dogs are prohibited from all sports grounds and children's play areas.

We operate and maintain 60 playgrounds around the Taupō District, located in most urban neighbourhoods around the district including many of our parks and reserves. All playground facilities are free to access and available all year round.

To ensure the safety of those enjoying our reserves, bylaws are in place that restrict the use of the following:

  • motorised vehicles
  • trail bikes and motorbikes
  • horses
  • lighting fires
  • alcohol

Council provides and maintains 60 public toilets around the Taupō District with some facilities located in our larger reserves.
